Groceries on Wheels

Groceries on Wheels is a delivery assistance program provided through Alamance County Meals on Wheels. This service provides grocery shopping assistance to senior citizens who are unable to secure groceries themselves or through a family member. This service also assists caregivers of elderly individuals who need a little relief. Friendly shopper volunteers receive training and a criminal background check before being matched with a client. Payment for groceries must be collected prior to shopping. There is not a charge for this service.

We help individuals who:

  • Live alone.
  • Are unable to drive.
  • Are unable to shop due to physical or mental limitations.
  • Do not have anyone who can shop for them on a regular basis.
  • Client’s responsibilities:

  • Have a prepared grocery list; (if client needs assistance with the list, the volunteer can help).
  • Provide payment for the groceries (options include store credit, gift card, check, food stamps, or cash).
  • Contact volunteer in advance to inform when groceries are needed.
  • Volunteer shoppers are not permitted to transport their participant to the grocery store or any other location. Alamance County Meals on Wheels’ insurance carrier does not allow such service.

The GOW clients receive several benefits from this program. They will have groceries in their home, form a friendship with a loving volunteer who will be regularly checking on their needs, and will be able to discuss food choices and nutrition with their friendly shopper.
