Meals on Wheels
Alamance County Meals on Wheels, Inc. (ACMOW) delivers over 100,000 nutritionally balanced meals per year to medically frail, disabled and homebound citizens of Alamance County. Meals are delivered at noontime on weekdays throughout our area. The meals are prepared by a local caterer and delivered to nine different drop-off sites. Volunteers pick up the meals at the drop-off sites and deliver to individuals homes. All meals served by ACMOW meet the North Carolina guidelines for meals served to those 60 years old or older. ACMOW provides hot, frozen, and emergency meals. We provide regular and a diabetic type meal.
ACMOW provides hot meals delivered to each client’s door by dedicated members of a team of over 800 well-trained volunteers. Frozen meals are available to those who live in the far reaches of our service area and those who have therapy during meal delivery times. Each recipient of frozen meals needs to have the ability to work the oven or microwave and have the freezer space for five meals each week. Emergency meals are provided early in the winter season for when inclement weather prevents meal deliveries, so no client will go hungry. Every client receives an emergency food box containing prepackaged, shelf-stable meals.
Eligibility: Meals on Wheels recipients typically:
Client eligibility is determined by the criteria above and are evaluated by a trained social worker. Some clients require meal delivery for a short time, such as an illness and recuperation, while others need the service for many years.
Each ACMOW client receives a monthly recap of the number of meals delivered and the costs of these meals. Each client is encouraged, but not required, to make a monthly donation to ACMOW to help provide meals to them and others in need of the service.
If you think you, or someone you know, may be eligible for meal delivery service, please contact the Alamance County Meals on Wheels office at 336.228.8815. An ACMOW employee will arrange for an “in home” interview to determine whether the potential client is eligible for the program, and to complete all necessary paperwork.
